Diploma Envy

For Christmas I got Matt his diploma plaqued. Apparently that is not a word. I had his diploma put in a plaque form. He did the same for me when I graduated. It just takes me 7 years later for me to return the favor. :) As I have compared the two I have noticed a few things. First of all, mine is a little smaller than his. I tease Matt about it, but secretly I wish they were the same size, or mine was a little bigger.

Second, mine only says I have a Bachelors of Arts. Matt's goes into detail about what he graduated in, including his emphasis. How cool is that! Mind you, I only graduated in history (all the less ink it would take. Come on BYU). I was majoring in history teaching, but Talmage came a semester too soon. I would have been expected to student teach the semester after he was born, so I just switched it to history.
Of note, I finished two finals the day before Talmage was born. One was a final project that I finished 11:00 at night. I was in full labor two hours later at 1:00 AM and Talmage was born at 4:00 AM. It was a busy few days.

Third, you may notice they obvious absence of Summa Cum Laude on mine. I am not bitter, well at least not too much. It has become an ongoing joke between us now about it. It sounds even better when I mix the words up and talk about "Cumma Sum Laude," and he reminds me the proper word order, unfortunately that happens several times. (It makes me sound smarter, really, when I mix them up). :) He never brags about his GPA, or graduation position. I didn't even know he was Summa Cum Laude till I got his plaque done for him. I am pretty sure if I was Summa Cum Laude I would throw it in his face a lot. Like when we disagree on a crossword answer, I would remind him of my proven great intelligence, and thus prove I was right. So I guess it is good that I didn't get the honor. I might be difficult to live with.
As I was talking about his Summa Cum Laude, Talmage overheard us, and he asked, "So does that mean I have a good chance of being super smart?" I rapidly answered, "If you take after your dad, you have a really good chance of being super smart, but if you take after me, its a guaranteed fact." He wasn't as positive as I was.

In closing, I still wish my diploma was bigger.

And I don't even know what Summa Cum Laude means! That's a nice idea to put it up all framed and everything. I could do that for Ben sometime I suppose. Poor guy- I don't think anyone even went to his graduation when he got his PhD. I don't even know off the top of my head if HE went! As for smarts, I think you and Matt are both quite smart and wonderful people- and you don't even need a piece of paper to prove it. ( :I like to remind myself every now and then that I'm smart regardless of the fact that I do not have a fancy piece of paper to "prove" it. We just keep learning all our lives, right? Most of the influential people in my life don't have any kind of degree- my parents for one.
